1.1.2 Special types of compounds

This chapter on ‘special types’ of compounds is about everything that deviates from the regular type of compounds (see 1.1.1). Normally, a compound is composed of a single genuine head and a single genuine modifying part, like Räidhuus (‘town hall’, lit. ‘counsel-house’). A Räidhuus is semantically and grammatically a kind of Huus(pl. Huze), where people literally gather in order to deliberate (that is, to create Räid).

Special types of compounds lack a genuine head, or a genuine modifier, or both. Here is an overview.

1.1.2.3 Synthetic Compounds (e.g. eenjierich, ‘one year old’)

1.1.2.5 Phrase Based Compounds (e.g. Goudwederdruppen, ‘large raindrops’)
1.1.2.6 Elative Compounds (e.g. steenriek, ‘very rich’)
1.1.2.7 Possessive (or: Bahuvrihi) Compounds (e.g. Grootbäk, ‘a bigmouth’)
1.1.2.8 Linking Elements (e.g. Bäidensbäiden, ‘grandchild’)
1.1.2.9 Separable Complex Verbs (e.g. kloarmoakje, ‘to prepare’, uutdwo, ‘to annihilate’)
1.1.2.10 Noun Incorporation Verbs (e.g. tou Seeltersk-balen, ‘to speak Saterlandish’)
1.1.2.11 Gapping (e.g. Äkker- un Gäärslound, ‘arable and pasture land’)
