-sum is an unproductive suffix that derives adjectives, mainly from verbs (for example swije to be silent > swijsum taciturn). Only a few nouns occur as a base (deugd virtue > deugdsum virtuous). Other cases are ear respect > earsum respectable, hân hand > hânsum handy, manageble and frede peace > freedsum peaceful.

The suffix also takes adjectives (selden rarely > seldsum rare) and a numeral (ien one > iensum lonely).
