2.2.3.4 Preterito-praesentia
quickinfo

Praeterito-praesentia show preterite inflection in the present tense. This is due to the fact that they have developed from historically preterite verb forms, reinterpreted as present tense forms and supplemented with a newly created preterite paradigm. Almost all of them function as modal verbs. The only exception is wiete ‘to know’.

The verb wiete features three present stems, (iek) weet, (du) waa(t)st, (wie) wiete.

The third person singular form hie duurt (instead of hie duur) is substandard, but very frequent. The substandard first person singular form iek duurt was created on the model of hie duurt.
