In matrix clauses of saying and attitude
quickinfo

UCV2s may be found as the semantic complement to predicates of saying and attitudinal predicates (thinking and expressing one's opinion), such as:

  • antwurdzje answer, fertelle tell, meidiele report, oantsjutte indicate, oanjaan declare, sizze say
  • bedoele mean, fêststelle state, fine find, leauwe believe, miene expressing one's opinion, ornearje claim, sjen see, observe, tinke think
readmore

These predicates are usually verbs, but it may also include nouns such as boadskip message and brief letter. Two examples are given below:

1
a. Hy antwurde dat hy soe it wol dwaan
he answered that he should it DcP do
He answered that he was going to do it
b. Se stjoerden in brief nei de âlde lju, dat hja soene oer in moanne trouwe
they sent a letter to the old folk that they should over a month marry
They sent a letter to their parents that they were going to marry in a month

If the matrix clause must be a clause of saying or attitude, then the UCV2 must necessarily represent what is said, thought or felt. This appears to be a semantic relation that need not be expressed as syntactic subordination.
