Partitive noun constructions and constructions related to them
quickinfo

Partitive constructions and constructions related to them involve two nouns. In most cases, the first noun is the partitive noun and the second noun is a content noun. The two nouns may be stringed together in a bare partitive construction without an intervening element, as in the following example:

1
In doaze flikken
a box chocolate.drops
A box of chocolate drops

The two nouns may also be joined by a preposition. The partitive noun designates a part, a property or a measure of whatever is designated by the content noun. Four examples are given below:

2
a. In doaze mei flikken

A box of chocolate drops
b. In protte fan 'e jongfeinten
a lot of the young.men

c. Trije fan 'e jongfeinten

Partitive and related constructions may be further subdivided, depending on the nature and function of the first noun.
