The resolution of hiatus between a falling diphthong and a following vowel

The two elements constituting a falling diphthong − the full vowel and the off-glide − belong to the syllable nucleus, which they must remain part of. In this case then the resolution of hiatus cannot consist of the movement of the glide from coda to onset nor does it consist of glide insertion. It proceeds as follows: the off-glide remains part of the nucleus of the syllable headed by the diphthong, but at the same time it is linked to the onset of the syllable headed by the following vowel. This dual association is indicated in (1) with the doubling of the glide. The realization of the left-hand part thus remains diphthongal. All this results in a reasonably bad syllable contact; the rhyme of the left-most syllable, however, is in accordance with the Rhyme Constraint, since it occupies two structural phonological positions.
