A to-infinitive
quickinfo

The copula of having combines with to-infinitives. An example is given below:

1
Omdat ik Bouke hjir haw te kofjedrinken
because I Bouke here have to coffee.drink
Because Bouke is here to drink coffee with me

The copula of having combines with to-infinitives. The to-infinitives in question may be verbs of body posture. The body posture verb may have its literal meaning, as in the following examples:

2
a. Dy't by Beets turf te stean hie
who at Beets peat to stand hat
Who had a pile of peat, near Beets
b. Dat de provinsje noch wat jild te lizzen hie út 'e pot 'lanlik gebiet'
that the province yet some money to lie had out the pot rural area
That the province still had some money in the fund for rural areas

The body posture verb may also have an idiomatic meaning:

3
Jenny, dy't blykber wat út te lizzen hie
Jenny who apparently something out to explain had
Jenny, who apparently had some explaining to do

In addition, the copula of having combines with intransitive verbs of activity which may exhibit noun incorporation. In such cases, the to-infinitive may occur on either side of the verb:

4
a. Omdat ik Bouke hjir haw te kofjedrinken
because I Bouke here have to coffee.drink
Because Bouke is here to drink coffee with me
b. Omdat ik Bouke hjir te kofjedrinken haw
because I Bouke here to coffee.drink have
Because Bouke is here to drink coffee with me

However, if the to-infinitive is a verb of body posture, it tends to precede the verb:

5
a. Dy't by Beets turf te stean hie
who at Beets peat to stand hat
Who had a pile of peat, near Beets
b. ?*Dy't by Beets turf hie te stean
who at Beets peat had to stand
Who had a pile of peat, near Beets

To-infinitives may not be accompanied by direct objects when the to-infinitive precedes the tensed verb:

6
*Omdat ik Bouke hjir in bakje kofje te drinken haw
because I Bouke here a cup coffee to drink have
Because Bouke is here to drink a cup of coffee with me

It is ungrammatical as well to have an object accompanying the to-infinitive if the to-infinitive clause occurs to the right of the verb of having:

7
?*Omdat ik Bouke hjir haw in bakje kofje te drinken
because I Bouke here have a cup coffee to drink
Because Bouke is here to drink a cup of coffee with me

It seems that to-infinitives built on a verb of body posture have a different structure from to-infinitives built on a verb of activity.
