-heid
quickinfo

The suffix -heid derives nouns from adjectives. For example, from derten playful we can form dertenheid playfulness. The suffix is related to -ens and -ichheid. It may be a pure transposition of the noun, displaying the abstract meaning 'property of being A'. However, in contrast to -ens, derivations with -heid may also refer to more concrete objects having the property as described by the adjective. Apart from a few exceptions, the suffix -heid can not be attached to a base with a final stressed syllable.
