1.2 Derivation
quickinfo

Derivation is a process of word formation where words are combined with affixes in order to create new words, for example the noun Snieder (‘barber’) is derived from the verb sniede (‘to cut’) by means of the affix -er.

There are three types of affixes:

  • prefixes (e.g. uun- in uungliek, ‘unequal’)
  • suffixes (e.g. -er in Snieder, ‘barber’)
  • circumfixes (e.g. ge- ... -te in Gedoute, ‘attitude’)
