NCV2s turn out to be insensitive to precedence as far as their relation is concerned to the main clause in which they are semantically embedded. In this respect, they pattern with normally embedded clauses with Verb-Final, and, in this respect, they are different from UCV2s.

Syntactically embedded clauses may occur to the left or to the right of the sentence in which they are contained. The following example illustrates this for an object clause:

1
a. Dat se ek komme soenen hie er net sein
that they also come would had he not said
That they would also come, he had not said
b. Hy hie net sein dat se ek komme soenen
he had not said that they also come would
He had not said that they would also come

NCV2s, unlike UCV2s, may occur at the beginning of the main clause in which they are semantically embedded. The following example illustrates this for an object clause:

2
a. Hy hie sein, hy wist it antwurd net
he had said he knew the answer not
He had said, he did not know the answer
b. Hy wist it antwurd net, hie er sein
he knew the answer not had he said
He did not know the answer, he had said

Furthermore, it is even possible for the matrix part of the sentence to split the semantically embedded clause:

3
Hy wist hie er sein it antwurd net
he knew had he said the answer not
He did not know the answer, he had said

The first discontinuous part of the embedded clause still triggers Verb-Second in the matrix clause. Alternatively, it may be thought that the Verb-Second is the result of an empty operator.

Furthermore, a UCV2 can only occur in a clause that is itself a V2 clause. No such restriction holds for NCV2. In the example below, the middle clause displays Verb-Final, yet the most deeply embedded clause is allowed to be an NCV2:

4
Ik tocht, dat Teake niis sei hy hie it net witten
I thought that Teake just said he had it not known
I thought that Teake just said he had not known it

The peculiar restrictions found with UCV2 do not hold for NCV2.
