Semantic properties of nouns in part determine which nouns may appear in which constructions. For example, mass nouns such as bûter butter are non-count nouns, which by definition do not have a plural form. Hence such nouns do not appear in the plural, they cannot be referred to by a plural pronoun, and so on. Nouns can, for example, also be divided in concrete nouns, which are tangible and abstract nouns, which are not tangible. For the semantic subdivision of nouns, see Broekhuis chapter 1 (2012).
