Left-dislocation in UCV2s
quickinfo

Left-dislocation occurs in main clauses, but is banned from Verb-Final embedded clauses. UCV2 nevertheless display left-dislocation.

The following examples show that left-dislocation is a main clause phenomenon, which is excluded in Verb-Final embedded clauses:

1
a. Teake, dy woe my wol helpe
Teake DEM wanted me DcP help
Teake was willing to help me
b. *Omdat Teake, dy my wol helpe woe
because Teake DEM me DcP help wanted
Teake was willing to help me

In fact, it is more appropriate to say that left-dislocation is tied to Verb-Second. Correspondingly, left-dislocation is found in UCV2s:

2
a. Omdat Teake, dy woe my wol helpe
because Teake DEM wanted me DcP help
Because Teake was willing to help me
b. Jouke hie sein dat Teake, dy woe my wol helpe
Jouke had said that Teake DEM wanted me DcP help
Jouke had said that Teake would be willing to help me

Consequently, V2 clauses occur in contexts that are semantically embedded or subordinated, though not syntactically.
