The missing verb following modals may be a motional verb such as gean go.

A light verb can be absent in case a motional interpretation is involved. This interpretation can be overtly expressed by the verb gean go. In the examples below, the motional interpretation can not be overtly expressed by a bare infinitive but by a to-infinitive:

The motional infinitive can remain unexpressed quite generally. Other types of light verb may show similar behaviour.
