Quantifiers without agreement
quickinfo

Some quantifiers do not themselves exhibit strong agreement, such as numerals, the indefinite article and the negative article. Other quantifiers not displaying strong agreement are guon some and all quantifiers ending in schwa.

Some quantifiers do not themselves exhibit strong agreement, though they of course trigger it as do all quantifiers (except the definite and demonstrative articles). A case in point is folle much, many, as illustrated in the example below.

1
a. Tefolle smoarch útlânsk bier
too.much dirty foreign beer
Too much dirty foreign beer
b. Tefolle lekkere útlânse tee
too.much delicious foreign tea
Too much delicious foreign tea

The schwa of folle much, many cannot be argued to be due to weak attributive agreement, since it also occurs when folle is used as an adverbial, and adjectives and quantifiers do not have a inflectional schwa when they are used adverbially. This is shown in the examples below.

2
a. Hy praat net folle
he talks not much
He does not talk much
b. *Hy praat net fol
he talks not much
He does not talk much
c. Hy praat smoarch
he talks dirty
He talks dirty
d. *Hy praat smoarg-e
he talks dirty
He talks dirty

Some quantifiers select a plural noun such as ferskate various, meardere several, guon some. Guon some visibly does not bear agreement, whereas for ferskate and meardere it cannot be decided whether the schwa belongs to the stem or is due to agreement. These quantifiers cannot be used as adverbials, that is, as floating quantifiers.
