Adverb as base
quickinfo

Suffixes may be attached to adverbs in order to create adverbs. Hence, it will not come as a surprise that the contribution of the suffix is often not quite robust. Their function is at the most to mark or strengthen the adverbial character of the base. This applies to suffixes like -DIMs, -en, -s, and also to -lings and -mes, although these are fairly idiosyncratic. The indication of the manner of an event is brought out by -wei and also by -erwize, although the latter suffix shows influences from Dutch. The suffix -oan expresses the same meaning, although with a subtle difference compared to -wei. Semantically, the suffix -ernôch is the most outspoken one. It is an instance of grammaticalization of genôch enough, and it also shows its meaning aspect.

It is assumed here that the relevant bases are adverbs. However, it cannot be excluded that in some cases the base is an adjective rather than an adverb. The situation is fluid as adjectives can normally be used adverbially. If the base was an adjective, it should be stressed that the suffixes discussed here will also have the function of marking the transposition to another word-class.
