NCV2s are main clauses syntactically
quickinfo

NCV2s share with main clauses the property of Verb-Second. NCV2s can be used both to express direct speech and indirect speech, as the two examples below make clear:

1
a. Pyt sei, ik sil op 'e tiid wêze
Pyt said I shall on the time be
Pyt said, I will be on time
b. Pyt sei, hy soe op 'e tiid wêze
Pyt said he should on the time be
Pyt said, he would be on time

The last example illustrates indirect speech, as is witnessed by the change from first person to third person pronoun and by the shift of the verb from the present tense in direct speech to the past tense in indirect speech. In indirect speech, the shape of the pronoun and of the tense of the verb become dependent on the pronoun and the verb in the main clause.

NCV2s, even if they represent indirect speech, pattern with main clauses with respect to phenomena like cliticisation, left-dislocation and speaker-oriented interjections.
