Words with a four- or five-positional final sequence of the shape long vowel + /n{s/z}/ or /-ns{t/k}/
quickinfo

This section deals with the four- or five-positional word-final sequences of the shape long vowel plus /n{s/z}/ or /-ns{t/k}/. The long vowel here is a systematic fact of Frisian phonotactics, linked to the process of vowel nasalization.

readmore

There are words with the final sequences /-V:n{s/z}/ and /-V:ns{t/k}/, as in the following examples:

1
Examples of words ending in the sequence -V:n{s/z} or -V:ns{t/k}/
kâns /kɔ:ns/ chance
ûns /u:nz/ hectogramme
winsk /ve:nsk/ wish
winst /ve:nst/ profit; gain; victory
hynst /hi:nst/ stallion

A vowel preceding the sequence /-n{s/z}/ is systematically long, as expressed by the /ns/-generalization (see nasal vowels and vowel length). This implies that consonants following /-V:n/ fall outside the three-positional rhyme. In the above words, this holds for single /s/ and the sequences /-sk/ and /-st/.

extra

/-sk/ in winsk and /-st/ in winst and hynst cannot be considered complex segments in underlying representation (see the end of words with /st/ and /ts/ as final sequences of a five-positional word-final sequence).

Due to vowel nasalization, /n/ is not realized in these words; it manifests itself in the nasality of the vowel by which it is preceded (see Vowel Nasalization).
