The periphrastic comparative consists of the function word mear more followed by the adjective.

readmore

The comparative can not only be expressed by the comparative morpheme -er following the adjective, but also by the word mear more preceding the adjective. The word mear more is itself the comparative corresponding to folle many/much. so there is an a priori choice between morphological and periphrastic, as shown below:

1
a. yntelligenter - mear yntelligent
more intelligent
b. rynsker - mear rynsk
more lavish

In actual practice, there seem to be some factors favouring either the morphological or the periphrastic comparative. Roughly speaking, the periphrastic comparative occurs more easily with words having more syllables. There are some specific cases where the periphrastic comparative is favoured.
