-oot
quickinfo

-oot /o:t/ is a rare non-native unproductive stress-bearing cohering suffix found in a few inhabitant names (Caïroot someone from Cairo) and possibly in some other nouns like zeloot zelot. -oot formations are of common gender, selecting the definite singular article de, and have a plural form in -en (Cyprioten people from Cyprus).

The suffix -oot /o:t/ is found in a few inhabitant names (Cairoot someone from Cairo (with truncation of final /o/), Cyprioot someone from Cyprus (allomorph -ioot with truncation of final /us/)). The nouns can be input for adjectives by means of the suffix -isch (Cypriotisch from or pertaining to Cyprus). Feminines are formed by means of the suffix -e (Cypriote woman from Cyprus) or based on the adjective (Cypriotische woman from to Cyprus).

extra

De Haas and Trommelen (1993: 201) mention malloot goof and psychoot psychotic as as other cases of -oot formations. (Philippa 2003-2009) suggests another analysis for malloot (< French malotwasp, bumblebee). For psychoot one might think of nominalization of the adjective psychotisch psychotisch by means of truncation of the last syllable; exoot exotic animal that does not belong in the biotope it is found in < exotisch exotic might be analyzed along the same lines.

Given that they are also nouns of common gender and have a plural form in -en, De Haas and Trommelen (1993: 201) leave open the possibility that nouns like piloot pilot, zeloot zealot and idioot idiot, which are loans, also contain the -oot suffix.

In -oot formations, the suffix carries the main stress: Cairoot /ka.i.'ro:t/ someone from Cairo. As the transcription shows, syllabification does not correspond with the morphological structure, that is, the suffix is cohering.
