Formations consisting of a noun and an adjective show up in two different shapes. We have the usual pattern in which the first member noun acts as a modifier of the second member adjective. These are the well-known endocentric compounds. On the other hand, however, one can observe combinations which have the unusual property that the noun intensifies the properties of the adjective, as in sûkerskjin sugar-clean spotless. Such formations are dubbed elative compounds, and they are dealt with in a separate topic.
