Adjectival to-infinitive
quickinfo

Adjectival to-infinitivals are infinitival clauses which are the complement of an adjective. They are selected by the verb wêze be and by other copulas. The adjective may or may not be realised:

1
a. Omdat it ferhaal maklik te begripen is
because the story easy to understand is
Because the story is easy to understand
b. Omdat it ferhaal te begripen is
because the story to understand is
Because the story can be understood

The adjectival to-infinitive functions as the predicate of a predication, seeing that it can be replaced with an adjective:

2
a. Ik fyn syn ferhaal maklik te begripen
I find his story easy to understand
I find his story easy to understand
b. Ik fyn syn ferhaal nijsgjirrich
I find his story interesting
I find his story interesting

Adjectival to-infinitives differ from from verbal ones in several respects, for example with respect to word order. Furthermore, adjectival to-infinitives require their object to be realised in the structural subject position of the intransitive copula wêze be, as is shown in the example in (1). The non-finite complementiser does not appear in this construction.
